About this Program
The Adult ESL program offers adults with no or limited English proficiency an opportunity to acquire and learn the English language communications skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a competency-based format.  The curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of students, ranging from the English of daily living to the language required for entry into vocational and academic programs.

WHAT'S NEW?

NEW! OTAN is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 Technology Integration Mentor Academy (TIMAC). TIMAC is a peer-mentoring-based professional development initiative with the goal of supporting individuals at adult education agencies to become the technology mentor for their program. For 2010-11, 10 new participants will be selected. Participants will attend trainings in Sacramento on the following dates:

  • October 14 & 15, 2010
    January 21, 2011
    May 12 & 13, 2011

Travel costs will be reimbursed by OTAN, but not participant salary. There will be five additional spots available for tuition-based participants. Learn more on OTAN's Web site and at www.otan.us/timac.

Community Based English Tutoring (CBET)

The Division’s CBET Program provides English language training and tutoring skills to ELL parents of K-12 children.

Parent Engagement (GED) Preparation Program

The Division’s GED Preparation Program is designed specifically for LAUSD parents whose children attend High Priority Schools. WIA Course Supplements for CASAS test preparation

Help your students improve their CASAS test scores with these Division of Adult and Career Education test preparation materials created and field tested by Laura Chardiet and Eleanor Comegys:

     20 series - Pre-Literacy: for classes taking Forms 27R, 28R of state mandated tests (corresponds to ESL Literacy Level)

     80 Series - Level A: For classes taking 81R, 82R, 81X, and 82X of state mandated tests (corresponds to ESL Beginning Low)

     80 Series - Level B: For classes taking 83R and 84R of state mandated tests (corresponds to ESL Beginning High and ESL Intermediate Low)

If you know the course number of the outline you are looking for, choose "Search by Course Number" instead of "Search by department".  Enter the course number by typing in its six-digit hyphenated number (i.e., "50-01-52" for ESL Beginning High). Search the database of course outlines for course outlines from other programs.

Distance Learning Program

The Distance Learning Program enables students to receive instructional materials for use in their home.  Generally, they view or use the materials at home by themselves or with their families, complete worksheets or other exercises, and then return the completed worksheets for evaluation.  Click here for a list of the Distance Learning courses that are available. Individuals interested in finding out more about the Distance Learning program or desiring to enroll in a Distance Learning course should contact their local adult school.
