English as a Second Language

Student Work

The following links bring you to samples of student work.  In the projects featured at each page, students practice English language skills and structures they are learning in class as they simultaneously develop computer literacy skills.  For example, in the first project "ClipArt Comics" students practice writing dialogues using English structures they have been practicing in class.  The cultural component of being aware of the fact that people often say out loud something different than what they're thinking is an important part of this activity.

Detailed instructions for creating each project and for incorporating each project into your ESL curriculum are found at each link.

ClipArt Comics - Students use Microsoft Word and the ClipArt and "speech balloons" feature to practice language they have been studying in class.

2-3 or 4 panel Comic Strips - Students create comic strips at the website http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/ featuring language or interactions they have been studying in class.

One Word Poems - Students use the WordArt feature of Microsoft Word or PowerPoint to create a "One Word Poem."  Students pick a word or look at an image and pick a word that describes or evokes the image. The image becomes the background of the word on the page.

PowerPoint Grammar Practice - Students Use Microsoft PowerPoint to create slideshows demonstrating a grammar point that they have been studying.

PowerPoint Essays - Students use Microsoft PowerPoint to create short presentations on topics of interest.  They have the option of using ClipArt, digital photography, and WordArt to illustrate or decorate their presentations.  They can also use Sound Recorder to record their voices as part of the presentations.

Student Interviews - Students use Microsoft Word and a digital camera to practice Simple Present, Present Continuous, and Past Continous Tenses.

Research Projects - Students complete a simple research project individually or in teams.  They graph the results using Microsoft Excel and then present the graph and their project to the class using PowerPoint.

Animated Cartoons - Students create animated movies to practice language or grammar structures they've been studying in class using the www.dfilm.com website.

Cluster Diagrams and Paragraphs - Students use Microsoft PowerPoint or Publisher to create "cluster diagrams" to organize their writing.  They complete the project by producing a several paragraph essay using Microsoft Word.
