About this Program
The Adult ESL program offers adults with no or limited English proficiency an opportunity to acquire and learn the English language communications skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a competency-based format.  The curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of students, ranging from the English of daily living to the language required for entry into vocational and academic programs.

Distance Learning Program

The Distance Learning Program enables students to receive instructional materials for use in their home.  Generally, they view or use the materials at home by themselves or with their families, complete worksheets or other exercises, and then return the completed worksheets for evaluation.  Individuals interested in finding out more about the Distance Learning program or desiring to enroll in a Distance Learning course should contact their local adult school.

Online Professional Development for ESL Teachers

Instructional Technology Assistance Project Teacher Training Videos - Short (90 seconds to 20 minutes) streaming videos featuring classroom teachers demonstrating and talking about ways they integrate different types of technology in their classrooms. See videos on using interactive whiteboards, portable keyboards, computer-based projects, and the "English for All" video-based ESL multiskills program.  New videos are produced regularly.

Teacher Training Online - Two self-contained training modules teachers can view and complete online.  One module is on Family Literacy and the other is on Managing a SCANS-based Classroom. Both courses were developed by the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) and are free.  Complete instructions for using the courses are found at the CALPRO website.

Selected ESL Links

OTAN - The Online Technical Assistance Network.  A wealth of resources for ESL teachers including lesson plans, suggestions for using the Internet in the classroom, links to media and other resources, and innumerable articles on instruction and teaching. OTAN requires registration but the registration is free.

CALPRO - California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project:  Professional Development Centers (PDCs) provide training and technical assistance to local adult education and literacy providers. The Division of Adult and Career Education supports an official CALPRO Professional Development Center. CATESOL - California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages:A nonprofit organization open to anyone concerned with the teaching of English as a second or foreign language.  It is a state-level professional organization for ESL teachers affiliated with the international TESOL organization.  Especially noteworthy are the statewide and regional conferences held each year.

CDLP - California Distance Learning Project.  Adult Learning Activities for ESL students.  A free website with reading, listening and comprehension activities based on real news stories adapted from KXTV Sacramento.

TESOL - Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc.:  The international professional organization for ESL teachers.

Other Research on ESL and Related Topics of Interest

Information and links to recent research in the field of second language acquisition, ESL, teaching strategies, and related issues.

Guideline No. 38: Community-Based English Tutoring (CBET) The purpose of this bulletin is to assist personnel with the implementation of the Community-Based English Tutoring (CBET) Program. This revision replaces Guideline No 9 (Proposition 227: Community-Based English Tutoring) of the same subject dated July 28, 2005.  The content has been updated to reflect changes in the Education Code that became effective July 1, 2007.
